Thursday February 7, 2013 in the Super Dozen Bowling League at Super Bowl Family Entertainment Center bowling lanes a new bowling record was accomplished by the Welhouse Construction team. The team accomplished an amazing score of 1302 total pins in their second game of the league session. This score is currently good for the highest all-time Wisconsin State Bowling 5 person mixed team game and bested the previous high by 20 pins. Corby Blansette lead the charge in game 2 with a perfect bowling score of 300, followed by an 11 strike (out of 12) effort by Pat Knapp for a 279, Eric Kelly tossed a 248, Diane Welhouse was right behind with a 246, and Traci Brown finished up with a 229 to total the new state record of 1302. However the Welhouse Construction team didn’t stop there, after shooting a 1204 total in their first game they had a great chance to have a record setting series as well. As the strikes pilled on at the Super Bowl bowling lanes, the team continued to roll great scores finishing with a 1217 third game total and a 3723 scratch team series. The 3723 was good enough to finish as the 3rd highest 5 person mixed team series in the state of Wisconsin. The Welhouse Construction team now holds two of the top 5 mixed series all-time in the state!

The individual scores of the Welhouse Construction team are as followed. Leading off the team Traci Brown had 236,229,215 for a 680 series, Corby Blansette bowled second with scores of 217,300,242 for a 749 series, the third bowler was Pat Knapp with games of 224,279,238 for a 741 series, Diane Welhouse went forth with 280,246,258 for a 784 series, and Eric Kelly anchored the team with games of 247,248,264 for a 759 series. Congratulations on an amazing night of bowling for Welhouse Construction at the Super Bowl in Appleton, WI.

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
President Obama spent time with his daughters Thursday, taking them bowling at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe and then heading for shave ice at their regular spot, Island Snow in Kailua.

Hawaii News Now – KGMB and KHNL

The president began his day as he usually does, going to the gym at the Marine Corps base, according to pool reports.

It wasn’t really shave ice weather: skies were gray, the winds were occasionally gusty and there had been some rain. But some people knew what was coming when Secret Service agents arrived and Honolulu Police started blocking off Kailua Road. A few minutes later, just before 4 p.m., the presidential motorcade turned up from Kalaheo Road and into the Island Snow parking lot.

“We came for a shave ice because it was a bit wet on the beach, and shook the hand of the President of the United States of America. You don’t get to do that everyday,” said Nigel Watson, visiting from Melbourne, Australia.

“We were actually in the store and what turned out to be Secret Service knocked on the door and let us out, and then they started roping (us) off, and — yeah, it was a bit of a buzz,” said Watson, just a few minutes after the president’s visit.

“It was fun but it was sort of a surprise, and I didn’t know all those vans were going to come up because they didn’t look like police cars,” said seven-year-old Eloise Weary of Virginia.

The president, dressed casually in a navy blue polo shirt and jeans, stepped out of an SUV, waved at the gathering and headed into the shop.

“All of a sudden he came in and shook my hand,” said Taylor Souza, who started working at Island Snow last summer. “When he shook my hand it felt pretty good, like I got to meet the president, and not that many people get to get that option in their life.”

Obama has stopped in at Island Snow every time he’s been in the islands.

“The first couple of times was super crazy and shocking. And now he walks in the door, it’s like ‘I know these guys.’ Shakes hands with everybody and gets right in line,” said Rich Whaley, an employee who’s been in the store for previous presidential shave ice stops.

First Daughters Sasha and Malia walked out with their shave ice cones, along with other members of the family. Then the president walked out with his regular cone, and stepped toward the cordoned off area where about 30 people were waiting to shake his hand.

Watson was able to get a good snapshot of the president and exchange a few words. “I wished him a Happy New Year, and he wished me a Happy New Year in return,” he said.

The president also shook little Eloise’s hand. “And I’m never going to wash my hand again!” she said.

The whole visit took just about eight minutes. Handshakes done, Obama stepped into the SUV and the motorcade headed back to the Kailua compound where the First Family is staying.

Although the visits are becoming routine, they’re not becoming old hat. “He shakes hands with everybody and gets right in line,” said Whaley. “So he’s getting used to the order of everything and we’re getting used to having the president come by. So it’s really cool.”

The president’s shave ice? According to Souza, “Regular cone, no ice cream on the bottom. Melona, lemon lime and cherry.”

A 10-year old California boy who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as an infant is defying all the odds.

Sam Grayston, 10, of Laguna Hills, Calif., bowled a 300 last Friday at the Forest Lanes Bowling Center in Lake Forest, Calif.

“The pressure started to build and I threw the ball a little weird,” Sam said. “I was really nervous, but it kept going right to left and then all the pins fell.”

Sam’s mother, Laurie Grayston, said that Sam had part of his intestine removed and was fed through a feeding tube until he was nine months old. She was also told that Sam would never be able to sit up on his own.

“I didn’t want to believe it,” said Laurie. “We didn’t believe he was going to be held back. We thought he was going to be normal.”

Now Sam has to undergo daily treatment for his cystic fibrosis. This includes a few arduous breathing treatments every morning and night, including a treatment that requires him to wear a vest that shakes him vigorously to clear mucus from his lungs. He also has to take medicine each time he eats and has to drink constantly to avoid dehydration.

Despite what therapists and doctors predicted, Sam started to walk and has spectacular hand-eye coordination.

His father, Joe, a Los Angeles County fire captain and former professional baseball player for the Texas Rangers, taught his son how to play baseball and golf.

“He is great with almost any sport that uses a ball and a bat,” Joe said. “He is such a great athlete and he has a quiet confidence about him.”

“He has the most amazing swing as a lefty, in golf and baseball,” Laurie said. “He was on the 10 and 11 year old baseball All-Star team as a nine year old.”

According to his mother, Sam just wanted to try bowling for fun and now he can’t get enough of it. He wants all of his birthday parties to be at the bowling alley. The Graystons also set him up in a Youth Bowling League and started setting him up with private lessons.

“He just took off from there,” Laurie said. “I drop him off around 10 and he will play until 6 p.m. He is just focused on it; he is focused on any sport he does.”

However, Sam’s passion for bowling conflicted with his ability to play baseball and he had to make a decision.

Sam decided to take some time off from baseball so he could participate in his weekend bowling league. But, initially, this decision was met with some resistance from his parents.

“I had been his baseball coach for a few years and when he told me he was going to stop playing baseball and bowl instead I was like ‘Um, what?’” Joe said laughingly.

But, Sam’s parents said that they want him to follow his dream and do whatever he wants.

When Sam saw the last pin fall in the 10th frame he was elated.

“Happiness, lots of happiness. Most of my friends were there and everyone was watching,” Sam said.

Sam said that his favorite sport is bowling and his next big goal will to bowl a 700 series over a course of three games.

“Sam is an inspiration,” his mother said. ”He never complains and he is always in a good mood. He is just an all around amazing boy.”
